Book 1 - Outliers by Malcom Gladwell

..::*+ Small Talk +*::..
I solemnly swear that I'm not a book-reading person. But this is my new year resolution - I want to read at least ten books in 2014. It might sound pretty easy to you all, but I haven't read more than 10 books (other than those compulsory ones in my academic journey) in my entire life. Thus, please give me encouragement and motivation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see myself as an individual complex person. I don't think like normal people do. And I have tons of emotions and I express them pretty easily. Those who are near (not even need to be close) to me know and can testify this.

I always thought that this world is unfair. That the dominant people get what they want. That only the MOST talented person get what they deserve. That the nice guys (yeah I thought I am one) finish last. That those other people get all the girls I myself really wanted to be with.

Perhaps it's still is.

I, on the other hand, will always be the second best person, student, badminton player, Christians (believe me, sometimes I do feel that I will never be knowledgeable as some of my Christian friends), lover etc. And looking back, it's kinda pathetic to think such way. And what's worse, I've been stuck in this emotional self-pity state pretty much since the end of my primary school era. It's only once in the blue moon, and hopefully not this time, that I came out from that realm and to do something happy. Like really happy.

I want to stop here, and I also want to introduce a book - a book that is changing my mind. A book calls Outliers, by Malcom Gladwell.

In the book it talks about those success person - Aces in the Canadian Hockey Team, Bill Gates, Joseph Flom, Bill Joy, The Beatles, etc. These are some outstanding person in the history of humankind and honestly, after I read the book, their successes aren't surprise at all. In the book, the author went deep into the times, culture, background and what did these people do in those era.

These are the hardworking people, presented with opportunities, and grabbed them.

"Success follows a predictable course. It is not the brightest who succeed. ... Nor is success simply the sum of decisions and effort we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities - and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them."

These words don't make any sense if we do not study their background.  These words don't make sense if we do not know the cultural and social implications on their success. In short, their success aren't something that clock-worked overnight. Rather, they are series of little events in life that snowballed to their success.

The 10,000 Hours Rule
It starts by hard work. In the book it is said that to master a certain skill one, in average, needs to invest 10,000 hours into it. Bill Gates did; Bill Joy did; I did. To look back in the past, I spent the entire years between 7-12 years old in badminton. I went to school, I came back home to finish my homework, I went for badminton training. That's Mondays to Fridays. On Saturdays, either we did fitness training (which I often skipped because of Art tuition class), or we did jogging in Kuching Reservoir Park. In December we would have a month break, and I pretty much spent all those time either in Peninsula Malaysia, or travelling somewhere in other countries. In short, I definitely hit the 10,000 hours mark. In fact, I think I'm considered below average to have invested so much time in badminton and still play with my current standard. I was never proud of it. But that's another story that I might share next time. Yes might. But that explains why I am much better than average in badminton. This is one of my little successes in life, and it concurred to this rule. The other example to this is my DotA career. But let's not go into this.

Opportunities
In short, it is something that is presented to us. God's providence. The Beatles, yes John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles were given rare opportunities that forced them to perform lots of hours. That's why they were good. My dad was very particular about art (let's not keep obsessed with my badminton story), and sent us to drawing classes. That's why I sort of good in drawing. Joy Bill spent phenomenon of time in the Computer Center in Michigan University.

"How much time did I spend there? Oh, a phenomenon amount of time. It was open twenty-four hours. I would stay there all night, and just walk home in the morning. In an average week in those years, I was spending more time in the Computer Center than on my classes."

Michigan, in those years, was one of the universities that allowed hundreds of students to do programming simultaneously.

Legacy
As Asians we were always being joke that Asians are good in Maths. And being an Asian, most of the times I would just laughed that off. But the fact is true. We remembered numbers differently than the Westerns do. We read fractions different than the Westerns. We perform mathematical calculations different than, at least, the Germans do. We said 二十三 (two-tens-three), instead of twenty-three, or drei und zwanzig (three-and-twenty). This is one of the example of legacy advantages that contributes (I don't imply it "must make us") to the effectiveness of Asians in mathematics.

In primary and secondary school times, we had classes from 8am-1pm, and co-curricular activities after that. We don't have long summer breaks. Our year end break is perhaps as long as the winter break in Europe. That means we spent more time in academic sessions than the Europeans. Imagine if this has become a lifestyle of an Asian, if we continue to apply this cultural advantages in academic wise, it shouldn't be a surprise that Asians are better than the Europeans in sum, no? (Shucks, why am I still so poor in studies?)

Sufficient is enough
I always think that if I want to do something, I want to be the best. How to be the best? The easiest way is to compare with the rest of the people who are in the same boat as you. I want to be the smartest. The fastest one to come out with mathematical solutions to given question. And I realized that the more I compare, the more I was demotivated. I am not the smartest, not even in my peers. I'm not the most handsome one. I'm not the best student. Not the best DotA player. Not the most gifted with talents. Then the thought goes on: Then what for am I investing time into doing certain things if I'm not able to come out as the best one in the end?

"Hard work is a prison sentence only if it does not have meaning. Once it does, it becomes the kind of thing that makes you grab your wife around the waist and dance a jig."
Understanding why I need to work hard, despite I'm not the cleverest. Understanding why I need to do, despite the outcome might not be as expected. The reason is simple, though it seemed so sophisticated: By doing it I give myself a chance to step forward; By doing it I let myself to walk on the water; By doing it it leaves no room for me to regret, because I've given my best; By doing it I won't end up crying and complaining and pouting about how life is unfair to me. Life is never fair the moment even I don't give myself a chance.

So what's next for me?
After reading the book, I realized that this (im-)perfectionism stopped me from putting effort into things. I always thought I'm hardworking enough - I thought through things enough, I put a lot of effort into from studying, to chasing girls, to... you name it. The fact is, I'm merely scratching the surfaces. I didn't think deep enough. I remembered last time - long long time ago - that my mentor asked me to write down my identity. I did. But I just stopped there. To recall back, I guess that was the time when he read this book Outliers as well.

Now I understand why I need to know my identity. It is through these properties that I can determine what the next steps could be. It is through these "Eigenschaften" that I can dream - a dream where the chase has a base to kick-start. It is through these identities that I know how to be grateful. Counting the blessings aren't enough, to me. Knowing what are you doing with these blessings is far more important. It's like Parable of the talents. But I've been taking all these providence for granted. I've worked with aces people. I've been into two house churches with totally different leadership styles and now I'm leading one myself. I've been blessed with mentors of different styles which none of my church friends here has had before. I've been to what was the finest schools, both primary and secondary, in Kuching. I was privileged to be under Sarawak Badminton Association "Project Player" Program. Both my parents were academic excellence in those years. I've been blessed with an almost-ten-years-already scholarship from the government. I am a Malaysian who speaks Chinese, Malay, English, German, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese and un poco español. The list goes on, and if I could just make full use of some of these blessings... If I could just stay focused on Jesus when He asked me to walk on the water... And if I could just surrender my love life totally to God instead of crying over the same issue over and over again... And if I could, quoting Nike, just do it...

I always have had dreams. The unrealistic ones.

In 2014, I want to rediscover my identity, to build confidence, and to march on towards my dreams - the newly defined dreams.

You who reads, please lend me hands.

[Updated] Timing

why am I so disturbed about my future..? Is it because I want to know it now, instead of allowing You, my God to have Your timing?

I worry, because I have only a year more before I come to the end of the study - come to the conclusion of study life and the determination of whether I should stay in Germany, or go back to Malaysia for good.

I worry, because I want to know the reasons and begin to work towards it; to prepare for it.

But, God, why are You not speaking to me?

Why can't I hear anything from You?

Remove any disturbances that could keep me away from hearing from You, for my heart desires for You and to do Your Will.

How to seek Your Kingdom and your Righteousness? You're the lamp of my feet, I pray that You will guide me to Your perfectness.

In Jesus's name,
Amen.

update 20130709 - talking about how real God can be...
Making the Most of Your Time (Joyce Meyer: Promises for Your Everyday Life)

Time really does fly, doesn't it? On the other hand, in some situations, it may seem like time crawls! No matter how fast or slow it feels like time goes by, each of us only has a certain amount of time on this earth. With that in mind, I want to ask you, what are you doing with your time?

Time is such a gift from God! I see every day how He takes His time to make us what He wants us to be. And then, in His mercy and grace, He gives us time to get in agreement with what He's doing in our lives so we can experience His goodness. What a loving God!

So, ask yourself, "Am I in agreement with what God is doing in me? Or, am I struggling and fighting, impatiently trying to do things my way?"

I can assure you, if you're struggling with God, you're just wasting your time, but if you're in agreement with Him, you're using your time for great things.

Remember, God is gracious. He takes His time. We might think He's taking too long when, in His goodness, He is just waiting for us to line up with the work He's doing in us. He won't rush. He is patient. Our struggling only delays our progress.

So maybe this is a good time to change your outlook and start looking ahead to a new way of doing things, a new vision for life, a renewed faith and trust in the One who is always at work in us, and always for our good.

My encouragement to you is to trust God and spend your time getting in agreement with what He is doing in your life. Let Him define your purpose. Know in your heart that He has great plans, and no matter how much time He takes, He loves you, and He always has your best interest at heart.

Prayer Starter: Lord, I want to spend my time agreeing with, not fighting, the great work You are accomplishing in me. I thank You that when I start to waste time, You always remind me that You love me and that Your timing is always best.

He is so real.

Prayer for Malaysia

Guys and girls,

please. We don't need foreign intervention. We need God's intervention. We know the truth: This world is full of evilness. But let us not be bound to the earthly matter, and trust in Lord and His timing.

The sky is the darkest before the dawn arrives. But darkness will not tear us apart. Regardless of the outcome, I am proud of everyone of us for coming out to try to make a difference for our beloved country.

Election outcome might not be as what we expected, but that doesn't tear us apart and to deny that we are indeed still 1Malaysia. Thus, be proud of ourselves. It's not only about winning the war, but the togetherness that we had to fulfill our duty as fellow Malaysians.

Keep praying for the better future of our country, no matter what your religion is. Keep strengthen our bonds as 1Malaysian, no matter what ethic you are. Keep believe in Malaysia, for it is tanah tumpah darahku.

Again, we need not foreign intervention. We don't need to repeat our history. We have learned. We will move on. We are united. We are Malaysia.

Smile, because you and I wanted for a better Malaysia.

What saddens me is that some of us actually think that BN won legitimately. Luke 23:34 - "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

The Holy Spirit in 2013

It's not always easy to have things your way, even though you actually mean it for good. It is after this period of transition that I learn that I actually don't really that fit-in to situations easily and as I please. It's always nice to work with people, but the difficulty of getting a work done in a group is exponentially harder with the increasing of number of people.

Utter disappointment of myself, today was. Having this perfectionist side of mine, I couldn't help to set high targets and goals for myself. A level of which I think I'm capable of achieving. But the problem is, that sense of fulfillment that comes after doing something is undoubtedly rare. There's always a part I screwed up, if not the whole thing. There's always some areas where I think it is okay but in fact it's not, according to them. And sometimes I do feel that hey-hands-off-please-this-is-Qi-Hao's-way-to-do-it, but most of the times it only rises another doubt or confusion of what I thought I'm capable of. It's something discouraging, and I felt discouraged. And here I am, sitting here, typing, confused, disappointed, and complaining. I guess you all get this part of me quite often.

I wonder if this is actually why I am never to born to be perfect in something. Or wanting things to be perfect as it should be is the main issue to begin with. Nevertheless, personally I don't think wanting things to be perfect is a wrong thing - it pushes someone to a high-achievement state. Unlocking what you could possibly do more. Discovering yourself deeper. But, the perfectionism element grants me neither adequate motivation nor strong will to make things perfect. In the end, what left is just another mess.

I like the phrase "against the current". This is an action that I openly admit that I cannot do it. To me, it involves a lot of pain, casualties, suffering, hurt, and above all, confusion. Unless the issue is about the Truth - the faith that I have about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit - of course. I cannot be oppressed, else I would turn into confusion. I cannot oppress, for I am not standing unshakably firm on any sort of ideas, religion/faith excluded. I guess I have this individual complex side within me. Taking out religious element, I don't know who I am. Some say I'm too humble to take credits of what I am capable of, but often I just think I'm not that good enough.

It's a constant struggle, in short. The more I discover about life, the more I realized how inadequate I am. The more I go into something, the more I am lost. On a happier note though, I know the Truth. I know the importance of empowerment by the Holy Spirit in life. That's the spiritual answer to this issue. I guess I'm still in the constant struggle of Jesus-like vs. Mr. Hyde within myself. Everyone struggles with this in different stage of his/her life - God-dependent vs. my effort - and where do the credits belong after that. The fact that I never get things done perfectly as it should be might - in fact I hope it is - just be an indication that I'm not that humble enough to be fully submissive and in total reliance of the Holy Spirit.

Thankfully - and I really thank God for this - that the theme for the church in 2013 is about "fueled by the Holy Spirit". To me it's something urgent to understand who the Holy Spirit is and to what extend (obviously duh..) Its involvement in our lives should be. It's about the need - and the wanting of the need - of the Holy Spirit and Its manifestation in our daily lives. It's about exploring and discovering the power of the Holy Spirit. I have a hunch that this is the missing puzzle to the picture of which I want to look at. In fact, maybe it's the bigger picture that I should be looking at.

It is always a mystery to me about how great people (especially those in the Bible) are/were driven by the Holy Spirit. And to go further on that, how does one juggle between dependent on the Holy Spirit versus my own effort. While the technical answer to this is obvious (one shall not simply just stating the obvious), I am looking forward to the practical steps in which I can do it in different areas of my life: eg. the inability to do something perfectly - is it because I am not depending on the Holy Spirit (enough)? How is it feel like to be empowered by the Holy Spirit? What is the result (outcome)? Finding the peace despite the outcome? How do I gain (recover) the confidence in life through the Holy Spirit? The list goes on. There is so much questions I want them to be answered and actually I'm looking forward to uncovering the answers to some of these questions that I have.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit to take moves confidently - this is what I want to learn this year. Sorry for the long posts and thank you for bearing with my complains and stuffs. If you have any words and encouragements please drop something in the comments and above all, keep me in your prayer.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me - John 10:27 NIV

Funny how it turns out to be a teaching for myself. Praise the Lord.

Prophecy

..::*+ Small Talk +*::..
Instead of going to school, I stayed home. Instead of lying in bed because not feeling well, I decided to blog.

Hello "friend"!

This "friend" of mine went through lots of ups and downs in my life. For that I'm eternally in debt.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

People are wondering how I am doing in this new place. I must admit there're number times when I cried, (in fact, just yesterday night) some unhappy things happened and stuffs, but all I can say is, I am who I am and I insist not to live as who you think I should be.

And God is faithful. And He knows me way better than I know myself. I still think making the decision to come to Duisburg is the best decisions I have made in the past 3 years (sounds like some ungrateful kid huh?)

Clueless of what I'm talking about? I guess everyone deserves to know what happened. And so the story goes..

Once upon a time.. Nah I'm not gonna do that. Okay seriously, here goes.

I love my previous house church. But over the past one year I really do sense the urgency to really rise up and take up responsibility as a child of God. And I knew that wasn't just an urge by myself, because it kept coming to me. I knew, that it was the time to change season, after having the field completely empty because of the previous harvest, which one 5 years ago. I felt so comfortable in group, that I couldn't see the growth of myself. In short the curve was like a capacitor, and I was reaching the saturation point.

This wasn't right. I need to "step out of my comfort zone". A phrase that everyone says but only minors actually execute it. I couldn't remember how much or how long I started to pray to God, "God, I need to grow, I need to change, I need to discharge, I know it's time to change season.. but there's so so so many uncertainties in my life - Bachelor studies, what should I do after that, where am I, where am I heading to - and I just don't know where to start from. Lord, help me to choose, shut the doors that are not meant to be opened, and I will follow."

Simple prayer as that and God really showed His power: He shut off lots of chances, and slowly it was clearer and clearer that, Baden-Württemberg is not the place to change season. But stuffs happened: I know clearly, that the easiest and most comfortable door is to stay in Heilbronn. Nevertheless it was shut down: Hochschule Heilbronn rejected me (I couldn't believe it even until this point). I had to finish up my Bachelor-Thesis as soon as possible so that I could use the result to apply for universities.

God, however, is not a God who makes us to be His robots either: We all have our own free-will to choose. He granted me choices: both Universiti Kassel and Universiti Duisburg accepted me. But I knew clearly, Duisburg is the place because it is the place where the spiritual support and growth are the strongest.

Despite that, home is still where the heart is, and that time it was still belonged to Heilbronn. By then lots of things happened. Unforeseen circumstances happened, and I messed up quite a lot in terms of my relationship with people. I disappointed the trust and respect of a lot of people around me. And some of the mess I carried up to Duisburg.

But God convicted me during Regional Weekend. It was so hurting that I couldn't stop crying during a worship session, when God convicted me through the teaching before the worship. I couldn't take it anymore. I sensed that God said, "convictions and repentance start only when you start to let accountable people to share the load with you." And God sent people to me, to hear my problems, funny enough that they are two of the few people I felt comfortable with; people whom I've known for at least 2 years. It really felt that a heavy burden was lifted off from my shoulder.

By then I mixed into the new house church here under the lead by Jia Uei and I began to understand that, like how He led me to Christ over the past 18 years, He is leading me to His purpose and plan for me. I am convinced, that the Lord our God is changing the season - it is the time to sow seeds and start to grow. I began to see the bigger picture, and couldn't stop but to be amazed by how great God is.

God did not just put me around with passionate people. He stirred up this passion for His name within me - the passion to rise up.

Today I can say that I am thankful that our God is real and His ways are higher than anyone of us. He has plans and purpose to each and everyone of us.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

It is such an encouragement to hear and to know and to understand and to be reassured that I am wonderfully and beautifully created and knitted together [by God]. I am His child; I am His household; I am His son and He loves me so much.

To be assured of His heart and His acceptance of who I am in His sight

To lift up my head, and to see His grace and love and mercy that flows in and through me

"I will cause there to be increase in pray in your life, compassion for others, because you begin to see people for who they are and you would not judge them but to come [to the Lord] to say 'God, I beg you to touch their lives'".

"if you would give yourself faithfully to this prayer and to be faithful and consistent surely you will see My mighty hands move."

"Do you not know that My Spirit is in You?" says the Lord Almighty.

God does forgive His people when they come before their feet, to be thoroughly honest and repent on their wrong doings. But God never say that they are free from the consequences that they have to bear because of that. There's an analogy to it:

There's this young man in his teenage life, and often he was angry on people who does wrong at him and condemned them. Realizing that that was wrong and he had to change, he came to his father. His father led him through the kitchen to the backdoor to their courtyard, and told him, "son, the next time when you feel angry at someone, instead of releasing anger on them, you take this nail and hammer it into the wooden doorframe. And every time you forgives someone, you plug on nail out from the door."

And the teenager followed his father's instruction. In the beginning there were so many nails hammered into the doorframe. But the teenager kept trying to forgive and up to a certain point, the number of nails started to decrease. Finally one day, he managed to not to have any more nails on the doorframe. He was so happy, and he brought his father to the doorframe and said, "look father, there're no more nails on the doorframe."

The father took at look at the doorframe and said, "yes son, it's good that you have forgiven them, but you see, son, the the doorframe is no longer as smooth and pretty as before. That's the consequence that one has to bear for every sin we committed."

I teared, knowing I'm exactly the sinning son. So, despite the fact that God promised that He will always forgive us, it doesn't mean we don't have any aftermath/consequences to bear. So the best way is, nevertheless, repent and stop sinning.

A lot of things in mind, but I will prepare myself well.

This Is Our God

This is our God.

Keep my eyes focused on You and Your Glory,
so that in everything I do, it's is You that people can see through me.
And it is You and You alone.

Father in Heaven,
hallowed be Your Name,
Your Kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven;

Give us today our daily bread,
forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors;

Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us away from the evil one.

Let Thy Will be done.

blessed

It is until now that I know, that shifting house needs a lot of money.

I spent a lot. It isn't a good sign. Even my first Google Adsense payment is not enough to cover these expenses. A little worried about money. =/

I found myself enjoying in working life. Although I have to look into lots (I think about a hundred or more) of TargetLink modells in MatLab, I enjoyed the life quite well. I enjoyed the time with my apartment's people. They are very kind and fun people. I have a cool boss whose name can be shortened to JFK. It seems like I have good opportunity with JFK. I like JFK in American history, I like my ex-house in JFK-road, and I like my new boss JFK. Well, his name not John F. Kennedy. But he is a cool guy; has style, shows good leadership, good-looking and somehow all the female workers & students know him. =/

JFK's boss is also someone steady and cool and I'll be meeting him tomorrow. And he wants to talk to me more, according to him. I wonder why. Haha. I also like my a senior/junior of mine, whose job I will be taking over. He is younger than me, but I will take over his internship job from next week onwards. And Seriously, I think I'm still unable to follow what he taught me since yesterday. Oh well. =/

In short, I love this company and I love the environment. I love the system. So far I got 3 hours OT and I will collect until 70 hours (max) so that I can have a good time during summer =D

I'm also grateful to able to stay in this house. This house is a 5 person WG, and all of them are nice people! 2 are leaving soon, but I'm very fortunate to able to know them. I know this might sound a little sakai, but yea, I never stay in a WG before and hanging out with these people are fun and great. And since everyone are Praktikanten and those who are writing their thesis, we are all free at night and it is fun to spend time with each other to know everyone in person.

In the end, the injured leg is another blessing in disguise. When I called the Hausmeister to take the room, I did pray hard that the people who I would be living with would be nice people. And God answered my prayer!

They say it is during the darkness that the Light shines brighter. It is definitely true. Being a 3 years old Christian, I thank God for putting me into such a situation, where I referred as "the new darkest period of my life". I prayed for a deeper level of faith, and God put me into such a situation that I really did feel lost, forsaken, and abandoned. It reminded me the situation in the bible:

Then he(Jesus) got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples (me) went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us (me)! We're going to drown!"
He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then He got up and rebuke the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
The men (me) were amazed and ask, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey Him!"
Matthew 8:23-27 NIV, brackets mine
It was a meaningful journey of my new chapter of (working) life. I'm looking forward to each day. Let's keep the momentum rolling. I'm such a blessed child.

Matthew 4: 1-11

When the world turns around, you’ll understand that none of the earthly things that you are currently hold on to will remain.

When Jesus returns for the second time, you’ll realize that the worldly fame and honor and praises and achievements will be wiped off, just like that.

When the spills out, you’ll realize that your recklessness has its own price to pay.

Then again, what was/am I doing now? It was such a simple question for myself each day as self-check tool. I went after earthy matters. I chased after my own pleasures. I acted when I was supposed to wait. I exploded when I was supposed to be calm. My speech, it doesn’t reflect of who or what I want to be. My thoughts weren’t on You, when all these while I am always in Your thoughts.

I feel ashamed. Despite being merely 2 years plus Christian, I am ashamed of myself. I could recall tons of situations when I fell over to temptations rather than standing in it.

As soon as Jesus got baptized the Spirit led him into the desert to be tempted. After 40 days and 40 nights fasted, the Devil took the chance while he was in hunger to tempt him.

Jesus didn’t turn the stones into bread to feed his hunger. He didn’t obey Devil’s temptation. Despite his weary physically, and although he is able to turn the stones into bread, he answered instead, “it is written, ‘man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’”.

The Devil brought him to the highest point of the temple and in Jerusalem, and asked him to jump down, for it is written that God will command angels to concern him, that he will not touch a stone on the ground. Personally, I would just jump down and be saved and boast to the devil, that God will indeed save me. But Jesus didn’t do so. Instead, he answered, “it is also written, ‘do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again without giving up, Devil brought him to a very high mountain and showed him the kingdoms of the world and their splendors, offering to him, if only he bow down and worship the Devil. But Jesus didn’t do so. He commanded the Devil to leave him, quoting from the old scripture, saying “worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”

The Devil left in the end. Looking at it, one might think it is just some normal story-tale. But if you look clearly, those temptations are exactly the weaknesses of us all. The first temptation is to tempt our basic physical needs: food, water, air, sex…

The second temptation is to tempt our faith. Faith is believing in what is unseen. And personally, theoretically it’s easy. But when it comes to real life, when all the things that you hold on to are depending on this faith, not many can really keep this kind of faith. When death lands its claws on you and dragging your life away, are you still able to hold on to this faith?

The third temptation is to tempt our pride, wealth and power. Are we willing to give up all the authorities and power and wealth that we have for this faith in God? Are we willing to humble down and be servant of Christ than be a worldly king that owns whatever there is on the earth? Bear in mind as well all things are created by Him and to Him and for Him. Where am I?

I want to have this kind of faith. I want to live a holy living and not just flowing around. I don’t want to follow the flow of the world, but to live according to His purposes and wills for me. I want to store my rewards in heaven. I want to do things for God. I want to rejoice in the Lord. I will have adequate of living, for my God will provide me not more nor less. I want to stand up in the midst of all these temptations. That is why, some old habits should be given up. Some old thinking must be given up. Some dearly feelings that I hold on to, they must be put down. For my mind is not even an inch as great as His. Teach me Lord, to really be still and know that You are my God. Open my eyes and my heart, to listen to You and to work Your will. Give me the heart to rejoice in You, for You are God alone, in both good times and bad. Teach me, to let go and let You. Break me down to build me up. Let Your Words to be heard by me.

“Surely goodness and love will follow me all days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
Psalms 23:6
